Topic Wiki

Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

According to their chart it would be $45 for new customers.
I'm paying 55 now and it's about to go up to 60. So 45 is a good thing.

Planning to call up and find out when they can set up service and cancel current service for that day and open new account for wife same day. Maybe they can even do the whole thing in one visit.

Anyone reason that wouldn't work?

EDIT:  guess I might as well call retentions first and ask to match to save us all the bother.
Safe for me to tell them outright that if they don't match it I'll cancel service and open a new account?

Do I ask for retentions, or just tell them I want to close account and they'll transfer me there?

I would suggest telling them that you would open a new account with them, just tell them you'll shut the account...
You could ask for retentions...

No they won't do it all in one visit.

Actual speeds vary by area, based on the amount of congestion on the lines. It doesn't make sense to ask someone how the speeds are in lakewood, though it would make sense to ask for speeds in certain neighborhood/area.

If your paying for 25 down, you should be getting that, if your paying for 50 down, that's what you should be getting... If you don't get what you pay for, they will send someone to fix your line. I never had an issue with speed.

So basic procedure is:
1.  Call and ask for retentions
2.  Ask to be matched to current 39.95 promo
3.  If they refuse, close account
4.  Open new account in wife's name with promo

Correct?

I'll accept -.5

When you pay for the top speed a company offers, that depends on congestion.
When you pay for a lower tier like 25, Optimum actively throttles your internet in order to reach the 25/dl speeds so congestion wouldn't matter.

I've never heard anyone complain that their speed on Optimum was to slow for what they where paying... I pay for 50 down, and I get 50 down at any given time...

Retentions couldn't match 39.95 for 15/5, she just offered to extend my current promo of 55.90 for 50/25 for a other yr. told her to discontinue service as of shabbos.

Can I call up now to schedule to have an account set up in wife's name next week even though my account is still active at this address, without jeapordizing her eligibility for the new customers' promo?

I suppose there's no reason why she couldn't be a subsequent tenant moving into the apartment next week after I move out, and setting up internet in advance...

If you don't need phone, I see 39.95 per month for internet only. In 11203. Not sure if all zipcodes are the same.

For the cost of an obi and a $15 phone from Amazon you can have a permanent phone line at home for $0 per month through GV.
