Topic Wiki

Below is a link to a list of modems that are compatible with Optimum. Depending on the speed you have you will need to get a modem that can accommodate that speed.
A modem has channels that represent the speed it can handle. It's displayed as download channels x upload channels, so a 16x8 modem means it has 16 download channels and 8 upload channels.

It's not recommended to get anything lower than 16X8 since speeds are only going up in the future.
Chart showing the channels needed to support the Optimum speed

  • Optimum 100, 8x4 or higher
  • Optimum 200, 16x8 or higher
  • Optimum 400, 24x8 or higher

There are many modems available on Craigslist's and eBay as well, there is no need to buy a new one as long as it's compatible.
https://pickmymodem.com/approved-modems-for-optimum-cablevision-internet-service/

Once you have the modem you can call Optimum tech support and ask them to provision a new modem and give them the MAC id located a the modem. They will also send you a prepaid FedEx label to return their modem and the price will be reflected on your next bill. You just saved $10 - $10.89 a month in fees.

For the cost of an obi and a $15 phone from Amazon you can have a permanent phone line at home for $0 per month through GV.
Is the voice quality of Obi the same as a regular optimum voice line?

Retentions couldn't match 39.95 for 15/5, she just offered to extend my current promo of 55.90 for 50/25 for a other yr. told her to discontinue service as of shabbos.

Can I call up now to schedule to have an account set up in wife's name next week even though my account is still active at this address, without jeapordizing her eligibility for the new customers' promo?

For the record I called and set up an account in my wife's name and got 44.90 (15/5 would be 39.95) for 50/25 and they are coming to set it up tomorrow.

I then called to reschedule the disconnect for tomorrow instead of Shabbos and the CSR told me it's too late - it's already been processed.

HUCAd and CSR told me they will disconnect tomorrow.

My original promo was 49.85 plus 4.95 for 50/25. Was about to go up another 5.
I just began another promo which for the next year  is 10 less than I've been paying on my original promo, them goes up $10 to what I have been paying for the following 12 months.

Haven't lost anything.

Anyone get a good promo or retention deal lately? Had a double play promo - phone and internet - rate of $59.95 for 12 months and just got my first bill outside of the promo which raised it to $100 per month. When I called Optimum two agents in retention told me this is the best they could do at this time for just the two services.

Called Verizon and they offered me $70 for up to three years. Would rather stay with Optimum though. Anyone have any luck lately?

First things first,  get yourself an Obi! Once that's done and your phone number is safely ported over,  have your wife sign up for optimum (internet only) at the promo rate...

Didn't think of that, that's a great idea! Thanks! Couple of follow up questions on that:

1) Did I read awhile back that Obi started to charge, if so what is the charge?

2) If I decide that I'd like to add tv service within the next 6-12 months, do you still think it's worthwhile to get Obi?

1) Obi charges for the box and Google Voice provides the free phone service

2) Obi will most probably still save you money... but either way, over the next 6 months you'll have saved enough money that the Obi would pay for itself...
My office buzzes to the JewishMusicStream!!!

Spoke with optimum a few weeks ago and they offered $39.95/mo for first 12 months for their lowest High-speed internet only. Now they say they started charging an extra 4.95/mo just to rent the modem. Spoke to chat rep. Seems this just started Nov. 17. Nothing they can do about it. Tried calling phone rep. Still seems like they're not budging. Any ideas? The 5 bux isn't the biggest deal in the world. It's just annoying. What other ISPs are there in Flatbush that might be cheaper/just as good?

I have it. It's slower than 3g. I wouldn't call it a viable option. :P
