That reminds me: I just helped two guys who are newish with credit ( short history and low CL) apply for both Citi and Chase cards. They got declined by both Citi and Chase, but I was able to push them through with Chase recon. No luck with Citi.

Then IME is definitely better, because my (personal) experience (which I'm referring to) isn't as a credit newbie. Besides, that's the context for our discussion, Dan's 10 cards, your 11, and my issues getting more from Chase (none of us are newbies). Perhaps for newbies Chase is indeed easier.

Makes sense.

Care to share the reason - so we could all learn wat not to do. ?!

The reason seems to be spending of over 20k a month via Citi checking accounts (always paid right back), where I nearly maxed out my card.

Call the reconsideration number, tell them why you're a good customer and ask them to reconsider the application.

They already had a credit history, but less then two years.

Think of all your positive aspects as a customer
*Always pay on time
*Not a heavy user of credit
*Pay your bill in full every month, etc

so what is the good reasons u gave him for so many open cards

1. whatever the benefit for that particular card is: free first bag, double miles, elite status, no foreign fees, primary rental insurance, whatever...
2. feel i get better treatment using the "company card" when i use that particular airline/hotel
3. don't mention sign-up bonus

Too many to list but I only carry two in my wallet.
Main use – AARP (5%)
Backup – BOA CR (2.5%)
"Elvis Has Left The Building"

How much do you spend on your cards. AFAIK AARPs real benefit is 5% flat over six months with no signup bonus, if this is the case you'd have to spend >$10k on this card alone (over the first six months) just to break-even (compared to other cards when you consider the signup bonuses), and then you'd have to get another AARP every six months just to reset the 6-month counter for 5% bonus. now worth it IMHO.

Compared to another card (Amex 50k, Chase 50k etc), you get 50k for purchase (after spend requirement), and then you get points for spending, and ontop of that you get all the protections (which I dunno if the AARP card gives you), and those points are worth more than 1cpm. Not worth it IMHO.

Perhaps. Which bank issues the AARP card?

chase

Should work, but for smaller spenders and/or for people who prefer miles Chase has better offers for a 3bm IMHO.
