I once had someone swipe 800 from my debit card, they first authorized it for a small amount yo confirm that it works.

a cashier  that works in home depot told me that he "used" to be in that business its very simple if u( or a cashier :o) see the card and the numbers with a machine that costs $40 you can make a magnetic strip and swipe the fake card while the account holder still has his card in his hand. is scary (at least when its more than $13 its scary)

Still a hassle. My sister once had $3,000 cleared from her account in one day, the bank never ended up explaining what exactly happened, but at least they put the money back as soon as she sent them a signed affidavit.
