Dan, I know you mentioned you want to buy NEW, but new is expensive to insure... What about a three year old car (lets say for example the altima) You would save tons of money so you could put it towards a great bumper to bumper warranty, and the insurance rates would be much much lower... and you still won't have to worry about repairs

I bet insurance is much lower in OH than it is in NY/LA's urban jungles... It shouldn't be too much considering that Dan has been driving for years now.

Good point, I'm thinking about Chicago where the rates are ridiculous!!

Well for good reason...
In Beachwood, OH everyone has their own 2 car garage to park their car so it's not left on the street, people use turn signals, and the only car that will cut you off is the one with NY/NJ plates...

I'd say car insurance companies (and health insurance companies for that case) have a higher margin (percentage-wise, on risk) in NYC compared to Beechwood OH. There's no justification for that, it's all greed.

(sorry for the thread OT/hijack)

Ridiculously high? or low?
Ive found rates to not be that bad...although i cant really compare to many other cities. Im paying $628 for full coverage on 2 cars with 2 drivers.

Per month? With collision? For both cars?

No collision. One driver. One car.

The PenFed card reduced the cost of your insurance ??? or do you mean the overall cost of having a car?

Well sort of. In order to get the PenFed card, you need to sign up for the national military family association. If you are a member of the NMFA, you get a discount with Geico. Im not sure if its a percentage, but it saved me about 12-13%

That's amazing. If it works in NYC as well, it might add up to quite a bit. Can anyone officially sign up for NMFA?

AFAIK anyone can join as a civilian. There is a $20 annual fee (which you only need to pay the first year if you are just getting the card and dont have geico).
Im sure you can call Geico and ask them what your premium would be if you joined the NMFA

Why just 1 year?
What if Geico asks for verification of your membership later on?
