It's funny, though, how they were both trying to get rid of the Grand Marquis, her as well as the rental company!

I liked the Sonata a lot, but the front passenger seat is definitely lower than other cars.  If your passenger isn't at least 5'4" they better enjoy the view of the dashboard as they won't be seeing much outside...
Dumb, dumb, dumb move Hyundai!

I haven't even tried a Mazda yet.  I just associate that car (atah ohev et ha'maaazzda...) with renting a car in Israel, which is always a experience from gehenem...probably not very fair to it but that's life.

Right now I'm heavily leaning towards to the '11 Altima 2.5SL with CVT transmission.  Seems like a very fun car in my test driving and the fully loaded version seems to be very negotiable in price and gets great gas mileage.

You'll be putting much more money into Mazda repairs down the line. IMO go for the Sonata.

Keep pestering them, tell them you don't have time to come in and that you want to buy something this week.
Granted many dealers don't like to give out the door quotes via email, but they will if pushed.

You can look on AMEX ZAG for a negotiating point but you can do better.

I was in a dealership yesterday negotiating on at $27,500+ Altima with leather/fully loaded.  They tell you they only make $2K profit, blah, blah, blah.
I countered with $21K+ and they laughed at me, but after a number of rounds of negotiating the price came tumbling down to $21,500+.  Now I'm emailing other dealers from other states to see if it can be had for under $21K+.

If you buy out of state, do they deliver or you go and pick it up?

I would fly to BWI or NYC (going to NYC anyway, or buy an $80 OW ticket to BWI) and drive back if the savings were significant.
Of course first I would show the quote to the local dealerships and see if they'll match it or at least come close.
The trick is just getting the out the door quote in writing.

Do more expensive cars have more room to negotiate?
Say if you could get $6000 off a $30,000 vehicle would you be able to get more off a $60,000 vehicle?
Basically, do they drop a certain amount of dollars or is it percentage?

Depends on the car the time of year, current manufacturer incentives, etc.  I once got a $42K Odyssey down to $33.5K.

Even if you want to pay in full with cash it can be worthwhile to finance it to get the rebates for that and then just pay it back after a couple months or so.

Can you record the (audio of the) negotiation for us, or that's asking too much? I just can't seem to comprehend the willingness on their part to "loose money off you!"

Also, Dave Ramsey claims that cash - real cash - is the best negotiating tool. Ever tried that?

you'll have to get a anti shakes or something to carry it.

unless you want to bring coins form the mint - for which you might need a truck...
