Not to be a party pooper, but there is a reason why the cheap fares are being offered in those months. I've been to BCN a few times, and I can't imagine what there is to do there in the middle of the winter. In other words, for some destinations, a fare for winter travel which is one half or even one third of the fare during the summer is really a deal. Just my two cents worth.

If you're looking to to go Europe and don't like freezing cold, it isn't so bad as a winter destination. And $300 for nonstop to europe is almost always a great deal. And the reason the fares are so low is competition, in addition to what you mention.
