Hi,
I know this has been posted elswhere and for the life of me I searched and cannot find the thread. My question is using the the Freedom or Sapphire Preferred for Gas and Amazon during 1Q. Is it not better to use the preferred with 2x points then the Freedom with 5% back?
Thanks
S

If you have both and can freely transfer points from Freedom to Sapphire, then unless you need to hit a SP minimum spend, or unless I am mistaken, I don't see why you would use the Sapphire on gas in Q1.

Also curious about the original question, when does the 7% come through, and I was actually under the assumption (very different from what I am reading here) that it was tied to your anniversary year. This was intuitive to me because I likened it to Citi's "anniversary" bonus of 1-5% you get on points earned with the ThankYou Premier on your anniversary date, or cards that give you a free domestic flight per year it is usually based on anniversary year not calendar year (at least in my experience, again, with the Citi TYP card). So if someone has answer I would also love to know!

2 Added questions about the Sapphire preferred which I recently opened:
- If I convert from Preferred to regular after 11 months to avoid the fee, will I still get 7% based on whatever I earned during those 11 months?
- If I convert from Preferred to regular, do I lose the ability to transfer existing UR points from SP to airlines? I don't want to lose this ability, any other ideas?

I'm not sure, but if the Sapphire pays a 7% dividend then I'm confident they'll adjust it for you manually if necessary.

You will lose the ability to transfer to airlines. You can get an Ink Bold that'll allow for airline transfer, or transfer your Chase UR points to someone else's SP/IB account.

Got ya, keep forgetting that Sapphire is 2x only on Travel and Dining.

you don't have to convert until you get the bill with the fee, and you have all the way to the day the payment is due, then convert and you won't have to pay the fee. So you have at least another month and a half to get the 7% bonus.

Thanks that's good to know. I also went into a Chase branch to open a savings account for $100 promotion and the banker told me I could convert from Preferred to Regular after the annual fee already hits but within a certain grace period of a month or more and it'll be refunded and converted, no questions asked. Which is consistent.

But does this mean the dividend is paid on card anniversary?

Is the dividend paid on points that posted in the previous Jan-Dec? Or is the previous 12 months. My 50K will be hitting in the next week and I wasn't sure if I get the 3500 bonus.

since this thread has gotten completely side tracked;
back to my original question:

When exactly is the 7% bonus paid?
Is it on a set date? or the January statement closing date? or is it February?
I just asked.  They told me the first statement in Feb.
If you don't care why would you comment?

I completed my spend on 1/10 and my billing cycle ended on 1/13. How soon afterwards should I see the 50K? I'm hoping to still get the 7%...

Should post on your February statement.
The 7% will also post in February, but my hunch is that it will be only on points earned in 2011.

Ok  7%  Bonus posts in Feb but how do I link the SP to my checking account, for the 20% bonus with cheking.

I searched and could not find the thread. Bank CSR said only with Freedom card not Sapphire Preferred for 20% extra bonus

Freedom card and Ink Bold are the only cards that have bonuses for having a chase checking account.  CSR was right (for once)

Freedom is 10%+10 points, Ink Bold is 20%.
If you aren't going for an Ink Bold threshold bonus (at 25/50/100K) the cutoff on non-bonus categories is $100 (less goes on Freedom, more goes on Ink Bold).  If you're going for a threshold bonus then all bets are off.
