I've gotten many thousands of dollars in bonuses from banks that will probably never recoup their investments with me, how does this make business sense?

Word of mouth advertising comes cheap for these miles, plus the 2% they profit from those that do spend under these offers, and those that they bet will pay interest, not to mention the long term goals of these offers. Plus any kickbacks they are getting from affiliated corporations associated with their relationship with said cardholder.

100k miles for 2% (they don't even make 2%, it gets split a gazillion ways) of $3,000 ($60) is a huge loss. Overall I think they're betting on the longterm here (but not necessarily winning in the end).

With the amount of points and miles out there, if they were all to be redeemed, every flight and hotel would be booked for who know how long...

I guess the same can be said for any marketing scheme, take for example superbowl commercials. Millions of dollars. Do they know how many more $1 menu specials theyll be selling bc of it?
