HP is offering a loaded Core i7 (2nd gen) laptop with 17.3" screen for $875 (after coupon NB4151).

Also note the cheap upgrade on the video card and 640gb data protection HDD, each $25 or less.

Prefer, as in being able to enjoy it for a few years, without having to send it in for repair every so often.

Dell, Lenovo, Asus.

Acer and HP became catastrophic since a good few years.

Others say what you say about Dell and Lenovo. I'll concede to you that Asus systems are built well, they're not common in the US, definitely not common when shopping around.

Dell and lenovo are solid laptops.

You can have bad luck everywhere, but when hearing too many complaints you know that you are dealing with a brand of barto quality.

I don't know people who bought their 'shvachste' models, only the regular (such as vostro) and upwards, so I assumed that all are solid.

I've had major issues with Dell's high-end XPS line. I only had issues with it.

I've also had Dells I've been very happy with. My Dell 700m lasted me forever (Dan had it too, ask him). I also purchased many Vostro 1500/1510/1520s etc for people, an bli ayin hara they have all been satisfied, even after 3+ years. We're talking $500 laptops, that's not bad IMHO.
