Federal Tax Deductions (Split From Interesting Articles)
« on: February 19, 2017, 01:26:58 AM »
I agree. Govt should get out of the marriage business.

Do you believe that the tax benefits of being married should be taken away as well?

Either way. The term Marriage was a RELIGIOUS term for thousands of years, and should stay as such. If the government wants to confer certain rights (mostly at death of one spouse), and charge people for those rights (in the form of a tax penalty), the religious relationship can be recognized, or establish an independent civil relationship (not called marriage).
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Why should others subsidize your choice of how many children to have?

Same reason other countries with dropping birth rates are. Higher birth rates are beneficial for society, social security, etc.

Doubt that's universally true. Perhaps certain countries would benefit from a younger work force.

Why else do you think there are tax benefits for kids, childcare, etc?
It's used to promote things deemed beneficial for the country in the long-run.

Go back to economics 201.

The biggest challenge facing major economies is an aging workforce and shrinking population (look up those issues for Japan, Russia, Germany and France).

Why do you think Germany is so welcoming to "refugees"? It's a quick fix to counter shrinking population and workforce (though it has unintended consequences).

Please name a country that would not benefit from a younger workforce.

Even without that reasoning since taxes are progressive the more dependants you have the higher your cost of living and therefore the less rich you are

Tax benefits are often due to good lobbying. I would know as I work with one closely. For example, why do you think State taxes are deductible? People in high tax states like NY get greater deductions than other states (with presumably greater benefits from those taxes); because the Feds want to encourage state taxes?

the theory for that would be that you shouldn't pay tax on money used to pay tax

I assumed we were keeping all the other assumptions about how the tax system works.  We could also start from first principles of you'd like

That's pretty cynical. A lot of tax policy is about lobbying,  but most really is about what the govt thinks is fair.  Like that you pay more (a lot more) if you have greater ability to pay.   State taxes goes right to ability to pay.  So does dependents,  including spouse.
