AA 500-mile upgrade question
« on: May 15, 2011, 06:46:09 PM »
My parents are currently in Miami, with a flight scheduled for the end of the week from MIA to JFK. My father has eight 500-mile upgrades that he got for being a million miler, so I decided to look into the possibility of getting them upgraded to business for their upcoming flight. The AA site says it will cost THREE credits per person, for a total of six. Does that make sense? And furthermore, is that considered "getting your money's worth" for those credits, or is that excessively expensive?

Getting your money's worth would be a flight exactly/just under 500 mile increments. i.e. 1499 miles.

Actually, they give you 50 miles grace (although that doesn't help for NYC-MIA).

You can only use them if you have some elite status with AA.

They are not guaranteed.  The stickers allow you to reques an upgrade.  Plat upgrades can clear 72 hours before the flight and Gold can clear 24 hours beofre the flight.

And if the upgrade does not clear, you get the credits back, I hope?

Barring a nuclear disaster or something, Heaven forbid, my parents ain't gonna be doing no coast-to-coast. ;-) Florida and Israel are pretty much their only destinations.

And b/c you can't use stickers to Israel and you can't transfer stickers to anyone else I guess I'm not sure what your question is?
It's getting your money's worth if that's the only option!

BTW had he had a non-North American address on his AA account when he crossed MM he woul have received 4 Evips (international upgrades) instead of 8 stickers.

No.
The upshot is the stickers don't expire.

You could convert the stickers to miles. 500 miles per 500 mile sticker.

so am i better off with the 8 stickers or the 4 Evips when i cross MM next week?
Can the Evips only be used on paid fares? (something i never do)

is there any risk with AA in changing the address and changing it back?
Will they send the lifetime gold package to that int'l address if i change it back right away?

This is probably my most flown route and I have upgraded many times using 500 mile upgrades. The flight is 1,090 miles. So yes, that would be 3 credits.
