Walked into my local library, paid them $20 via credit card and was done within 20 minutes.

I'm probably missing something, but what does a library have to do with passports?

At least in CLE they process them just like USPS does and it's a whole lot more pleasant.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Learn something new everyday. I wonder if they do that on the East Coast...

In Westchester, the best place to go is the County Clerk's Office -- if there is a line, it's never a line of more than one person.  It takes longer to park and go through security (it's in the courthouse building) than it does to submit the passport app.

One of my kids passports is valid 6 months from date of arrival in Israel, but not 6 months from date of departure. ( a few days off). I did some research There's conflicting info whether that's good.

The US govt has this to say. I think its plainly wrong.
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1064.html
Although a passport valid for six months from the date of entering Israel is not required by the Government of Israel, airlines may prevent boarding if a traveler does not have at least six months validity on his or her passport. Please check with your airline directly.

An israeli consulate says this- Anyone entering Israel needs a passport valid for at least six months from the intended date of entering Israel.http://boston.mfa.gov.il/index.php/en/component/content/article/47-general-information/516-visa-application
You'd think that would be accurate.

This site says you need it for 6 months from date of leaving. At least that  airline required it. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13342877/ns/travel-travel_tips/t/when-your-valid-passport-isnt-really-valid/

As mentioned before-why not just renew?  its a big deal since you want to get it renewed early enough to be sure you have it in time so its really only good for about 4 years.

Anyone have anything more on this?

From this website, which is made by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of Israel, found via the official Israeli Government website.

All visitors to Israel must hold a passport that is valid for at least six months from the date they are departing the country.

Good find, I guess I'll have to renew, can't afford to take a chance with the airlines or a border agent.

Which airline are you flying with? If you're booking via UA and have premier status, make the return an earlier date, after arrival change back to original date.  :-\

Wow thats fast. On another not I am in the process of getting a Passport for my daughter, and when I got all the documentation ready I was flabbergasted when I got to the Post Office in Brooklyn and they told me that all the Brooklyn Post Offices only do Passports now by appointment only. Seriously?? You guys are that busy? So I called the number last Tuesday and left a message for someone to call me to schedule a time and have yet to hear from them.
The quicker we abolish the USPS the better off we'd be.
Just so u know, u can apply for a passport in brooklyn, at the Kings County Clerks office on Adams Street at window 1... no waiting. got my sons passport in 14 days regular service

Currently, expedited service says anywhere from 2-3 weeks: http://travel.state.gov/passport/processing/processing_1740.html

If I'm traveling in less than 3 weeks, but more than 2, should I just wait to go in-person?

Need a U.S. Passport Immediately?

You should make an appointment to be seen at a Regional Passport Agency only if:

The U.S. passport is needed in less than 2 weeks for international travel
The U.S. passport is needed within 4 weeks to obtain a foreign visa
Contact the National Passport Information Center to make an appointment or locate a Passport Agency.
