Having multiple AMEX Plat or Gold Cards Simultaneously??

I am sure that this topic has probably been talked about within other threads, but I figured I would start a new thread so this info can be easily referenced.  Feel free to post links of posts within other threads that deal with the subject.

I currently have a gold card I opened almost a year ago and the platinum I opened a couple months ago, and I was thinking to go for round two for the 50k/100k bonuses. I can’t decide whether it is is better to close the old ones before applying for new ones.  Being that I have a lot of recent inquiries an instant approval is questionable.  So that means I will probably have to speak with AMEX credit dept. for reconsideration.  I would assume that both scenarios would be hard to explain to why they should approve me again.  If I just closed the cards then they will want to know why I just closed and am reapplying and if I have the cards open its kind of hard to explain why I need a second one.

I know some people on here have successfully gotten multiple Platinum Cards / Gold Cards and I just want to know if you could share your experiences and whether or not you closed the cards first or kept them opened and successfully had multiple cards of the same type simultaneously.

I just applied for the 2nd plat- it took a few days to approve me but didn't need to call anybody, just got approved.

First Plat was open still or closed? Also how many AMEX cards did u have open at the time? I currently have 4 (SPG Personal, SPG Biz, Platinum, and Gold)

I had the plat still open, spg, and I applied for the 2nd plat + gold and got both. I also just recently applied for 3 more amex card and got 2 of them

I applied for gold while I had one still open and got approved but was told when I called that I wasn't eligible for the 25K bonus because I had a previous card open when I applied.

I didn't wait too long, probably less than 5 months between applications, and second applications within 2 months of first account closure.

Five months between Platinum applications, I've had a few other Amex cards approved in between. I doubt they'll approve two Platinum applications in a row.

ya I meant 5 minutes between closing old and opening new one not 5 minutes between applications.  Its been 3 months since I applied the first time

I'd say you're safe, as long as they don't (manually) look for your old account (which is unlikely).

I waited 61 days between Platinum cards and they were approved immediately - both for me and my wife.   I didn't try getting two at a time...

my prob is I want to do a double browser app Gold and Plat while these deals still last... also I currently have MR points in my acct so I cant close both my cards or I'll lose 'em.

You can consider downgrading one of your existing accounts to Zync (or Green).

They stopped that I believe.... I tried several times around Pesach time for people and they said that as of end of March beginning of April they dont do downgrades unless you have had the account for 13 months.... and I was told that by probably over a dozen CSR's, I tried a lot.....

Has anyone had success downgrading recently?

I applied for an Amex plat in april. cancelled it beginning of April - after sucking out every ounce of juice i could get from them.
i then reapplied for the amex about 2-3 weeks after canceling.
when i checked my status online, it said "application cancelled". so i called and they explained that since i have an open card - they cancelled it.
i explained that it has been closed since, and i reapplied cuz i reconsidered the benefits blah blah... rep said they'll reevaluate.
again today i noticed it cancelled, so i called again for explenation. and rep says that they see i got all the benefits, and then cancelled. so, the most they can do is reopen the card without any promo benefis.

anyone think  if they "reopen" the card - is there a chance i might still get the points? or is there anything to lose by reopening?
 theres (at least...) 51k MR points at stake!
