Should airport pickup and dropoff still be a common favor?
« on: February 27, 2017, 01:50:42 PM »
I get asked about 10-15 times a year by friends and family to either pick them up or drop them off at the airport.

My question is, with the advent of services like Uber and Lyft where you can have a car within minutes by just a few taps on your phone, should this still be a common favor? I can understand that before these services, it was extraordinarily inconvenient to take a taxi from the airport. At busy airports it required waiting in long lines with all your luggage for a cab, so it was reasonable to ask someone for a favor.

Granted, there are a few exceptions. Elderly parents, guests coming from overseas for a special visit, a "choshuve" person etc. But the vast majority of these requests do not fall into one of these categories.

This question came to mind when I recently did one of these "favor runs" to pick someone up from an evening flight, the flight took and extra HOUR to taxi to the terminal due to some reason or another, and the trip took me 3 1/2 hours from start to finish. All this while constantly getting shooed away by airport personnel for waiting out front. Don't get me wrong, I am happy to do a favor and I had a great chat afterwards in the car, but I also had lots of things to do that night, and this literally took away four hours of my time.

So back to my question, is it time that people recognize that Uber and Lyft have taken over airport "favors", and always use those as a first option? Is it time to tell this to people who ask for these favors?

I agree. Unless there's a good reason (multiple kids in carseats, etc), this should be a relic of the past.

People spend money on their trips, all they want is to atleast save the money of the taxi to/from the airport....

For the people asking, it's not just about the "convenience" of getting a ride with a family or friend. There's the financial savings of not paying $30-$50 per direction that their looking for..

In CLE it's $23.

I'd never ask someone to spend over an hour of their time for me to save $23. And yet it's always being asked in Whatsapp groups that I'm in and I truly don't understand. If you can afford to fly you can afford the $23...

so many factors to consider.....
but in short if its a obligated for you to take them then obviously you should.
Or if you really want to like your in laws 1 Way trip

but in short more than 3 times a year is intense!

I don't get asked even 1ce a year.

Taxi is $30 1 way from Brooklyn to JFK!

Or start charging.... you'll stop getting requests....

Honestly, being on both ends giving and receiving rides I feel the best is uber/lyft aside from a few occasions that say otherwise...

Especially, if the airport is close by and relatively cheap(cle, mia, fll, jfk to farakaway   as opposed to Monsey, etc...) it's not worth it for anyone and it's just an  extra headache.

As a matter of a fact I started declining rides alot because usually i would end up waiting a long time for the ride, and that's the last thing you want to do after traveling and finally getting out of the airport.

When I do accept an "offer" for a pickup I usually regret it.

I'm curios what other people think.

Although I always appreciate a ride that saves me money, I agree that it should not be a common favor anymore. I taxi or uber it whenever possible. My father somehow became the airport pickup guy for all family members, and I honestly think it's kind of rude sometimes. He's dropping or picking up about 30x a year (we have lots of family in eretz Yisrael).

I remember taking an Uber for $24 Succos to Cleveland Heights. It was definitely not worth having to wait for family to show up or be waited on. Plus gas would've been $4-5. Though sometimes with Uber some drivers are interesting characters...

The return trip was around $27 which was basically the cost of my Frontier flight back to Denver.

Most woman and girls that I know are always uncomfortable taking taxis/Ubers alone.  Especially at night
