Anyone with any experience with Azores Island (PDL) - is it worth an 8 hr stopover during the day or better to connect immediately?

It's definitely worth stopping over. Get a tour guide and visit Sete Cidades.

Just to follow up...was able to book a full day private guide for 150euro for 3 people including Audi transportation all around Island. Well worth it and a memorable day.
Btw, was able to upgrade on Azores Air (Sata) using their "My Upgrade" last minute bidding for less then $100.  Business was lay flat on A330 from YYZ.

I sent my kids for a full day stop over there about five years ago and arranged a full day tour for 150EUR including car and guide with this company:Rui Medeiros - Azores Private Tours  Tlm. (+351) 914 616 240 or (+351) 962 758 186  www.azoresprivatetours.com.  Rui was highly recommended but he was unavailable that day and his replacement, Philip was excellent.  There is an historic shul there that they will include if asked and they can focus on natural wonders (hot pools etc, mountains etc.) and design a custom tour.
