Noise Cancelling Headphones
« on: May 18, 2011, 03:28:25 PM »
I carpool to work and the driver listens to talk radio and i study (talking-lectures) on my computer. i have bought noise cancelling headphones twice on amazon so far. neither are any good.
The issue is that im not listening to music (which would drown out the radio) its talk versus talk. (and also not the conventional hiss of flying on airplane that im looking to drown out)
I have read many reviews for different products on amazon but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions and experience about what one you have used and if itll be good for my need.
The ones i bought were 40-50 but am willing to spend up to 100. The Bose is 300!!! way to much :).
Thanks,

Get Bose. They are leader in this.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Bose QC15s, but they're more for cancelling airplane and other ambient noises than for cancelling out voices.

But you can always try them out and see if they're worth it or not.

Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Ya, I dont think there are any "noise cancelling" headphones that are going to do what the OP needs.

The only other idea is those really heavy "suction-cup" type headphones that I remember them using for hearing tests back in elementary school.  Those things seal around the ear and may block out noise better similar to the way earplugs would.  However I personally find them quite uncomfortable because they feel like they are compressing my skull, but if they would work for you then try them out.

Why don't you use sealing earplug style headphones. You can probably find something good for $50 and definitely for $100. IME these do a much better job of keeping out non-ambient sound than most noise-canceling on/over ear headphones. Try the Klipsch Image S4 earphones:

I can. They even offered me that steep discount on a pair I bought on eBay (or something, I'm not sure) that I wasn't even sure was legit.

I think it was their $100-150 (?) airbuds, they offered me new ones for $50, had to send the old ones in.

It also works when upgrading from older headphones like QC2 to QC15.

Doesn't have to be broken?
