WhatsApp is stopping support for all Symbian, Nokia S40, BlackBerry phones. Phones running older versions of Windows, Android and iOS operating systems will also not be supported.

Android users still on Android 2.1 and Android 2.2 are no longer be able to use WhatsApp.

UPDATE: You won't be able to use WhatsApp on the following platforms for:

Nokia Symbian S60 after June 30, 2017
BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10 after December 31, 2017
Windows Phone 8.0 and older after December 31, 2017
Nokia S40 after December 31, 2018
Android versions 2.3.7 and older after February 1, 2020

They officially charge $0.99 a year. They charge in app after the first year. Every time it popped up by me I pressed remind me later, and it didn't ask me for another few months at least.

They are paying mostly in stock, so when the bubble busts, they will have paid less.

Irony is the mobile carriers could have just blocked the app to preserve texting revenue.

Exactly.  The changed the whole plan landscape from limited minutes/sms with unlimited data to limited data with unlimited minutes/sms once they realized that nobody would pay for minutes or texting anymore because they had unlimited data.
