How would that work?
If 1 carrier would try that, it would piss-off the customers, causing many to leave.
The only way it could've worked, is if all carriers would simultaneously block Whatsapp,  which is very unrealistic.

it's not about the 99c per app, nor the ads that they can get -
It's about owning all the coders, and the "What's App" technology, and using these and their followers as a springboard to 'bigger and better' things....

Such as? What else can you build from a text messaging app? I guess they can force everyone to convert to Facebook, but as most are already users, they're paying several hundred per conversion

It's the originality of the program and the creators that give it the value -- They still have tons of potential
to build upon this - based on the super successful program, the 100s of millions of followers,
and the unlimited power of mobile communication!

Yes, there's a ton of potential, and yes, it's a lot money and it's overpaying -- but, they have the money,
and they have the interest and abilities in continuing to grow, so why not pay to own a hugely popular competitor with tons of future talent!?

If they did that people would migrate away and 16B investment becomes worthless. Question is how they monetize this without losing everyone.
