Officially every character is 1B. There are 1048576 bytes in a MB
Im sure Whatsapp uses Unicode, so every character is between 1 Byte and 4 Bytes. There is also overhead in the transfer, meaning even if you send a message with 1 character in it, it may very well be using more then 1KB. But in any case 50MB won't be easy to reach with just text communication.

Figured there was overhead. Never new that unicode uses more. I guess there are more than 0xFF characters?

i used whatsapp without thinking last month and i didnt hit over 50 and i sent plenty pics and received plenty pics.

the Q i have now is, how do i know how much a random app uses up? (not BB app like fb,bbm, gtalk) for ex. i want to use tapatalk.

Yup.

Unicode’s Universal Character Set has a potential capacity to support over 1 million characters. Each UCS character is mapped to a code point which is an integer between 0 and 1,114,111 used to represent each character within the internal logic of text processing software (1,114,112 = 220 + 216 or 17 × 216, or hexadecimal 110000 code points).

As of Unicode 6.1, released in January 2012, 249,763 (22.4%) of these code points are assigned, including 110,181 (9.9%) encoded characters, 137,468 (12.3%) reserved for private use, 2,048 for surrogates, and 66 designated noncharacters, leaving 864,349 (77.6%) unassigned.

Unless you can find an app for that your probably out of luck, apps all use different amounts of data.

AFAIK it works by mobile number, so it wouldn't work on a tablet.
