Over Yom Tov, we had someone randomly join our shul whatsapp group and posted inappropriate material. As an admin I couldn't delete for everyone, and unfortunately not everyone is tech savvy enough to delete the message themselves. So we created a new group chat and migrated over.

Two quick questions:
- Is there anyway I can prevent this in the future?
- Is there a way for an admin to delete content for everyone?

Thanks
You can switch the link to join the group, but there is no solution. It's one of WhatsApps shortcomings.

That particular issue seems to have popped up on some other Jewish groups in the last few days as well

Curious, has the join link for your shul group (which is likely how that c**p got in) has the link ever been on the exposed web?

Don’t post the invite link on chats.

Maybe don’t have an invite link, everyone must message the admin to join.

I'm an admin on a group that just had this.
As mentioned below, I know that the link had been on the web (although I thought it had been taken it down).

It's a bit annoying when people use the term "hacked" when referring to this, since it was really an issue of spamming.

The best you can do after the fact is report the contact to WhatsApp.

Reporting won’t really help. These spammers have a million numbers.

TL;DR - we deleted the group and moved everyone to another one. We never posted the link to the web, but we did have it in the shul e-mail , and sent it to a few people via WhatsApp. I used the link for the new group to migrate people over, and will change the link once the migration is complete. (I also changed the link for the old group as well).

I have the group set to admin only for now, but will turn on permission for others once the migration is complete. Posting for admins prevents this spamming problem to some extent, but for the usefulness of the chat (i.e. we need 1 more for minyan, and an admin isn't always there) we need to allow individuals to post.

How about making all the regulars admins?

Everyone has to PM an admin?
