I'm waiting for a universal app that covers features similar to BBM's, but an independent one that everyone will use regardless of what platform/phone they have.
I recently heard of one called Whatsapp that supposedly is becoming popular.

They've been saying it for a long time, but I'm not sure it's coming too soon. I've seen theories suggesting that RIM is stringing their customers along, by making them think BBM will launch on other platforms as well, when really RIM is dead afraid of a mass-exodus if they release BBM elsewhere. I think this has even been discussed on DDF.

I think all it will take is a good messaging app out there.

I agree, I don't thomk RIM will ever release something like this as BBM is IMHO there lifeline.

Just to note, KIK messenger (available for Iphone and Android) which operates the same way that BBM does, was available for three weeks on the blackberry. After three weeks and 3 million downloads RIM took them off the market and banned them from blackberry.

Besides for the slowness, which probably wouldn't be a problem on a faster phone, does it have good features?
Any that BBM has over it?

Can you connect with BBM users on the BBM network with it though?

Dream on, it's proprietary, runs on RIM's (closed) servers.

In a nutshell, RIM will never ever allow anything like this, simply because a vast amount of there costumers are not ditching their blackberry for a more trendier IPhone or Android, is only because of BBM

I owned a Blackberry for less than one month (BH!), so I'm not really familiar with BBM. What are BBM's special features over other messaging apps?

1. Delivery/read confirmation.
2. You can see when the person you're chatting with is typing.
3. You can send attachments.
4. You can invite multiple people to a chat.
5. Uses your data, so not limited (like SMS) and can be used across borders with no int'l sms fees.
6. Offers IM-like features, such as statuses etc.
7. You can send a ping/buzz. (some BBM users find this to be annoying, so less of a feature for them)
And others...

I'm not saying these features are exclusive to BBM, but with BBM they are packaged well and it works great and doesn't hog resources.
