Other issues happen faster. 1. Static Shocks 2. Broken USB 3. Plugging it into a bad USB and it shorts 4. Losing it or dropping it and it breaks..

People aren't such big fans of the 840, the 830 is a better series. Rakuten just had it on sales using the superpoints cashback

Agreed.  Stay away from the Passports.  Or all WD externals..
I've personally been very happy with the GoFlex (seagate) and so have others.  IIRC DH even recommended them the other day..

I make a point to stay away from any external drives that has an onboard USB. This is a change that happened a couple of years ago when WD and some other manufacturers as well took away the extra piece that connected to the hard drive a literally built a usb connection onto the actual drive. This causes many firmware and other issues with the drives. Its very common for the drive to still spin properly but stop showing up on the computer.

Only specific models don't use the on board USB, Seagate is one of the only manufacturers left that don't.

So I dropped my External hard drive and now when plugging it in it won't even read that it's connected. Any ideas of what I can try to fix this?
