Why stuff like this isnt gneiva and/or sheker, I have no idea.

There's a rule you have to bring your carry on when you check in?

Has anyone used the Travelpro Platinum Elite? It seems to be consistently rated online as the best soft-sided carry-on.

I can get it for $277, which makes it more palatable... any thoughts?
@Something Fishy Did you end up getting this? Also why do you specifically go for soft sided?

My  prizes from CV :)

Yes. Absolutely love it.

Soft sided lets me stuff more things in, and I hate having to either split my stuff into two halves or have things tumble out when I open it.

Soft sided suitcases are the way to go. In addition to what you're saying, sometimes I go somewhere and I wouldn't have the space for a full sized hard case open. With a soft sided, you can keep it open while the cover is leaned against the wall...

There's a rule you have to bring your carry on when you check in?

Um, someone sells you a ticket and the contract of carriage says that they allow you to bring a carry-on up to 7kg for free, and if its more it needs to get checked for a charge- so you hide it at check-in and tell them that you don't have any luggage...
No there's no rule you need to travel with a carry on.
Just not to be a lying thief.

(trying to make it not so noticeable at check in is one thing, the others are just straight gneiva)
Kenny is a frume yid, and gneivas/matteh akum is asur anyway, but go ahead and rationalize it anyway you want.

And cry me a river about your tallis and tefillin taking up all the weight - that's the same cost of being a Yid as paying more for meat is. You're just rationalising sheker.
(Anyway, you could always put them on at check-in...)

Hiding it? I'm not hiding it. I'm just not bringing it with me. If they don't ask me where it is. I don't see why there should be a problem...
I'll ask my Rav though. I'll see what he thinks.
Besides, like I said before- my carry on was once overweight. So I told I'll take stuff out..... And then I just put it back in later. What's the difference if I hold it in my hand or if it's in my case...

Oh, because that's the normal behavior of any other traveler...???
You sound like a the guy who says "I didn't steal it, I FOUND it"
Love to here what your Rav says. I'll ask mine too. (I'll ask a few  ;))
If he says it's muttar - Ask him why it should it not be classic maate akum?

And I do think that there's a major difference between "rearranging" the stuff in the bag in front of them vs not presenting them at all.
You wouldn't know the amount of money I've saved for people in BG with the old ELAL just reminding them that they're allowed to take their coats out of the suitcase and wear them.
(I'm not saying that in my bachur years I didn't pull off stuff with suitcases and carry-ons that I'm not proud of today... Sure I did, but I grew and learned...)

I'm not saying I don't hear where you're coming from, I do. There's a reason I said I'll discuss it with my Rav...

to be continued...

@yfr bachur

So I asked my Rav... I was discussing it with him for around 20 minutes, he couldn't see any problem with doing what I said..... And like you said, I asked him why it shouldn't be matteh Akum.. And he said, your not fooling or tricking the goy, they should ask you if you have any hand luggage, the fact that they don't weigh it, that's their problem...   They have the whole airport to weigh it, the fact that they don't, that's their problem... You don't have to bring your luggage to their face... And said even if that's not so, meaning you wouldn't be able to leave it behind, so what would happen. Who said they are going to weigh it anyhow, they many times don't, and even if they do, they'll sometimes check it in for you for free or they'll make you do the taking out thing, and there would be no problem with putting it back in....

( Additionally, sometimes when ppl have a night fight, they check in their luggage in the morning, and later they go straight to security...)

It’s only thievery if you say you don’t have luggage, but not if they don’t notice or ask you about it?

It's not whether you have it, it's whether the agent decides to weigh it the carry-on, which is rare.

I don't see why it's thievery to try to avoid having them weigh it at checkin if you aren't even asked about it.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Thankfully weighing the carry one is not a thing in the US. It's such a royal pain when some international airlines do.

Yes - especially when you are going to Europe on a four day ski trip and the swiss agent weighs it and makes you check it and then forgets to put it on the plane and it finally gets delivered, with all you gear for a four day trip, on the night before your return flight at 6am the next morning.
