Best carry-on suitcase
« on: May 21, 2011, 10:56:49 PM »
Any suggestions for a compact suitcase that maximizes space in the restricted size required for overhead bin storage?

I like the Kirkland Signature carryon at Costco.

Not cheap (I think $89 or $99) but it's a great size and is backed up by Costco's lifetime warranty/return policy.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Does anyone have the "Sprint Wheelie" by Merrell?
Now, that's a beautiful piece. I regret not buying it, and now can't find it anywhere.

I use a plain samsonite (if someone tells me how to figure out the model, I will have a look), which is made of hard plastic.

The downside is the weight, but it fully utilizes the allowed space, and as it has those clips to close I can push a lot inside, and close under high pressure.

Ideal for 3-4 days trips without checked luggage.

Also hard cases (if a normal shape) and decent wheels, are much more stable for long walks in terminals or when running to catch flights.

The extractable handle bar is also sturdy, and allows either to place something on top, or bedi'eved, if a little child is not in the mood for walking (without stroller at hand), to place him/her facing backwards, leaning his/her back against the handle bar.
Looks funny but does the job.

just note that at some airports, they have mamzeirim and mamzeiros (still figuring out which ones are worse) that enforce the airport's policy of limit on size and weight of carry-on. I definitely know that in LHR and MEL they make you crazy over it. they have a limit of 7kg (approx. 15lb). usually the carry-on itself weighs almost that amount. add tallis and teffilin, and you are way over.

You can leave it with someone else, or within visual contact, and say: no hand luggage.
Also the maximum allowed size for carry on, doesn't fit in the small aircrafts.

I blatantly refuse to hand it in for (as they so nicely call it) valet service.

So far I was b"h successful.

That is always a good idea.

Problem in Melbourne, after checking in and going towards passport control, they ask to weigh the hand luggage again. No way to say its not mine...

I flew from MEL, and like always with a carry on weighing close to the double of the allowed weight.

I don't recall having had an issue...

Obviously, they don't weigh every single one.
You can wait until someone gets "pulled over" then go.

Even if they do weigh, there are always ways to talk yourself out of it...
Just have your story prepared if you're not an on the spot type guy...

@moish: so statistically speaking, its just about time for them to lose one again.

Dan called LHR a black hole for luggage, which is very accurate.

This is what I use and I'm a fan. http://shop.heys.ca/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=xcase
It's called the Hey's xcase and it was built to be the lightest carry-on to maximize size limits, weighing only 5 lbs. Its downside is the configuration inside takes getting used to if you want to pack it well. They have some other models that look interesting that i'm considering, after I get paid by Amex baggage insurance for the one i have now. I've been using it for around 5 or 6 years and it just got damaged last time i flew. They sell it for $80, but i've seen it for around 60.

I like the Kirkland Signature carryon at Costco.

Not cheap (I think $89 or $99) but it's a great size and is backed up by Costco's lifetime warranty/return policy.
