David's trip planning thread August 2011
« on: May 22, 2011, 08:24:15 PM »
ok, i wasnt going to start one of these but so many decisions keep popping up that i figured id share my trip plans and hear from those who have experience.

We are planning to travel 8/13 to 8/19 and i was hoping to get to see LHR and VCE.
We have never flown F through europe and were hoping to have a layover in FRA so we can experience it at least once. With that said, that is why out return flight looks the way it does.

As of now our itinerary looks like this:
Sat, 13AUG11    LH4331    I    (ORD) 10:30PM - (FRA) 1:40PM
Sun, 14AUG11    LH9102    I    (FRA) 3:15PM -  (LHR) 3:50PM
Thu, 18AUG11    LH9033    I    (LHR) 9:50AM - (FRA) 12:25PM
Thu, 18AUG11    LH4644    O    (FRA) 2:10PM - (MCO) 6:20PM
Fri, 19AUG11    UA6755    O    (MCO) 6:53AM - (ORD) 8:50AM

I was planning to change leg 2 at some point from FRA to go to VCE instead and then book a ticket from VCE to LHR on 8/15 or 8/16 using BA miles or paying for a cheap ticket.

I just found availability to return in F on friday from LHR- ORD arriving at 10 AM on UA 747-400.
If i did that i would change my outbound flight to leave on Sunday instead of saturday night and arrange that we fly LH in F and have a layover in FRA flying to LHR.

So by making these changes, we would be flying F in both directions with our FRA layover on the way there. We would lose a day in LHR on the way there by leaving on Sun instead of Sat night. We would avoid flying back through MCO and would gain an extra day on the return by leaving on Fri instead of Thurs.

Am i crazy to want to experience the FRA layover at least once? We dont get to travel intl that often (sans kids no less) and dont know the next time we will be able to have such a trip.

Sorry for the long post. There is VS availability on the outbound. Should we just do that and forget the FRA experience? Anyone have thoughts?

Worth trying out the FRA FCT at least once IMHO.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Thanks!

The sat night 10:30 PM on our outbound is perfect as its right after shabbos and we can get a headstart.
I see our options now as:
1) keep everything as is and hope availability opens up in F on the outbound.
2) change the outbound to sunday flying from MCO or DTW through FRA and returning in F on friday AM on UA 747-400 (those planes were recently redone, right?)

Has anyone ever flown UA longhaul on the 747-400 in first?
Have all the planes been redone? The suites look pretty nice...

Haven't flown in it but did try out after my flight in J, MEL-LAX. (They actually offered me F for $1400 but turned it down.)
It's quite nice and personally would take it over VS J.

In almost all cases, you take First over Business. UA F on the 747 is quite nice. Virgin Business is pretty good but a bit tacky

Thanks.

We actually just changed our itinerary and are flying UA in F on the way back direct.
Any thoughts on seating for a couple? As of now the F cabin is empty...would you do 1A/1K, 3C/3H, or 4H/4K
