Need GPS, please suggest
« on: May 23, 2011, 11:56:01 AM »
Dan & everyone-

My car was broken into last night and my radio and GPS were stolen. It's time to replace the GPS. Without the GPS I am completely lost. (I can either navigate or drive, not both at the same time.)

Insurance is helping pay for the new GPS, so please suggest one of very high quality.

My losses are probably over $500, which is my deductible, so they might cover any reasonable replacement.

So you want the most expensive you can find.
Maybe this?

Ill ask the if they will cover that. They might balk at the cost. Can you suggest an excellent quality one that costs less? I see that the one on the mainpage of dansdeals has a lot of bad reviews. Want to avoid that, if possible.

I would get one from garmin, especially if you would ever like to use it outside the usa.

Even if for 2-3 days only car rental companies charge a lot for it.

I, personally, have a Tom Tom which i like very much, and lots of people i know prefer a Tom Tom over a Garmin, because of it's user friendliness,

But in truth it's a matter of taste.

Tom Tom's routing algorithms are a disaster from what I heard.

I've used garmin and Tom Tom and both can end up sending you wacy ways. I find that Garmin is less customizable (more "user friendly") and Tom Tom is much more customizable as well as it offers more options. For example when looking for a detour it allows you to chose how soon the detour should start, or to avoid a specific step of the route (this others may also have).

I had this one, and while its very cool, it doesnt always acquire satellites well and doesnt tell you when traffic is coming although its supposed to. Not recommended.

I have a Garmin and i love the simple interface. However it seems to lose sattelite reception often which is annoying. Not sure if thats a Garmin problem or a problem with where i mount it to my car

i have had both tomtom and garmin and love my current tomtom and will never get a garmin again ever
garmin traffic sucks there satellites all ways lose service when u need them most and the battery is not very good
tomtom traffic is very on the money the routing are much faster and more accurate with time of arrival it if ever loses satellite service its supper user friendly and u can customize every thing all most and when it hits traffic it reroutes before u hit the traffic or even realize ur hitting traffic some thing the garmin does not do
