I would suggest that u go to an Apple store, try out the macbooks, and see if you like it.

When you're there, look at the pricetags too. Anything windows based will be 30-40% less for the same specs.

It comes with the Intel HD Graphics?

Also $600 is expensive, why not get the 1 in the OP, If u just need it 4 school, this should do the job.
-JTP didn't say he plans on doing video editing like you did.
-JTP wants something portable.  15.6" isn't portable.  14" is the largest "portable" size there is. although some may argue that anything over 13.3" isn't portable.

Also even premium Macs like the MacBook Air 2 amazingly don't have a backlit keyboard like the 14" $600 Dell does at a fraction of the price.

Really now? Every laptop is portable. Also anything under 15.6" will hurt your eyes.

Please,  15.6" laptop is anything but portable.  I've never heard a 15.6" being called "portable."

And I've been using a 12"-13.3" laptop since before ctownbochur.com existed and my eyes have still yet to "hurt"

So people buy them not for portability? Then why not just get a desktop?

It's definitely too big to shlep around to school everyday or to travel with.
It's portable enough to move around the house though so it's more flexible than a desktop.

They are both on sale for around 280. TOSHIBA SATELLITE C655-S5121 LAPTOP or  Toshiba Satellite AMD 1.5GHz 16" LED Laptop. I understand that for this price i am not going to be getting a great machine i was just wondering if anyone out there has any opinions on which one to get. It will be used mainly to check Dansdeals ;) and watch some movies and a bit of work as well. Any help would be appreciated.

Laptop categories:
http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-7602_7-1016082-2.html

Thin-and-light, 12-14": A thin-and-light offers the optimal combination of portability, performance, features, and cost.
Midsize (aka mainstream), 14-15.4": Slightly smaller than desktop replacements and with limited battery life, midsize laptops aren't particularly well suited for regular travel.

i have a 15.6 inch laptop and def wouldn't want to carry around all day. then again i have a netbook which i would love to and guess technically it would suffice for basic word processing- but seems like a laptop is the way to go...i guess

so the reason to get a mac because they r cool... honestly that reason might be good enough for me :)

to clarify-i meant how to get Word?-  do they still have the .edu student deal? hows the limited edition that comes along for free?

it is a single core processor, so it will be REALLY slow. After sometime in use, you can't expect this laptop will last you a while, and even internet browsing will be annoying. It isnt strong enough to run any sorts of games unless you are playing like sollitare on the pc, or a game that is at least 8 years old. I would suggest at least an i3 Dual Core ~2.26Ghz to fit the best needs as you mentioned.
