It'll work for some people, but it's really annoying if you can't use it anywhere you don't have internet access... It'll also need an unlimited internet connection, seeing as the CR-48 comes with 100 megs a month which runs out very quickly when streaming video for example...

Not listed yet. But you're right, that'll be a big factor in whether this product takes off.

Looks like it'll start at $350 for wifi only.

Yup, I mean if google heavily subsidizes this, and I do mean heavily, it can take off.
Otherwise it will flop IMHO.

I don't think ~$400 is heavily subsidized considering the lousy specs. It'll only perform well (for the specs) because it's on a stripped down OS without much multi-tasking.

And they might just. They need Chrome to take off so they can become the new Microsoft. Remember all those IE anti-trust lawsuits...

You are going to be able to "rent" it for $20/28 (student/business) a month. Still not worth it IMO though.

That's before or after Google's heavy subsidy?

If it's under $200 (subsidized) it will succeed.  If it's over $300 I don't think it will.

Crazy to think people would sell their souls to Google for $100...

People will humiliate themselves on national TV for $20, so it's really not that crazy to sell your soul for a little more ;)

The main issue is that there isn't internet connectivity everywhere so its basically a paperweight when you cant get online.

And the even bigger issue is that I can't tether my Centro to it for mobile internet because it doesn't run windows.

Then it's a total YMMV. Depends on how hackable it is.

The Samsung $500 Chromebook is available from Gilt for $500 (only with a Google invite which I received). Anyone want me to order one for them?

Yup, seems like no Google subsidy after all..
