what if after i filed a successful return protection and got to keep the item, the merchant allowed as a exception to return the item?
$450 item- got refunded 300 via amex, now i get another 450 back? mucho fraud right?

Probably. I'd call Amex. Why would you contact the merchant after Amex gave you the credit though?

Probably for the $150 he didn't get refunded.

Do we know what the cutoff is? $1000 per a year -- is that based on order/purchase date, claim date (I doubt it), or refund/credits date?

I bought something online and had it shipped to the store- they told me initially they cannot cancel the purchase and refund it unless I physically show up in the store. I shipped it out of state to family, so obviously that wasn't going to happen. I find out now that after 60 days no pick-up they automatically cancel it.

Yep I tried that

, I know most major retailers can pull it up in their system.

Though the place in question is one of those small privately owned phone stores that sell tons of sim cards, phone cases and etc. It wasn't fraudulent so I'm not going to dispute... No computer cash register...It's one of those credit card portable readers (not the square) which gives you small printed receipt. Purchased a $130 phone. Do you think it's wrong/unethical if I just make a receipt with the exact cost?

Probably unethical and not worth the legal implications of them catching you. Maybe just being honest with Amex and telling them the situation will cause them to waive the requirement for the receipt as a courtesy. Of course, once you go that route, there's no going back and trying something else if it fails.

Probably a discussion for the ethics thread, but I would steer clear of that website. Especially when dealing with things like return protection. Messing with them on that qualifies as insurance fraud.
