$300 per item, 1K per card per year. So if you have an SPG card and a PRG card you'll only have 2k of total RP coverage, regardless of how many AUs you have on each card.

If you are unsure if an item qualifies for RP, then instead of asking for opinions here (slightly better than asking medical advice on facebook mind you), PUTPAC and ask the RP reps. You don't need to give your name or card info, just say you have an item or you will be buying an item and the store has a crappy return policy and want to make sure if there is a problem you can return it.

Return Protection:  www.americanexpress.com/return This is for when, in the first 3 months, the original seller won't accept a return, and the product is still in new condition.
Purchase Protection:  www.americanexpress.com/purchase This is for when, in the first 3 months, a purchase is lost, stolen, or broken.
Extended Warranty: www.americanexpress.com/warranty This covers only what the original warranty covers and extends it for up to 1 year.

Amex can approve RP claims even after the card is closed/cancelled, though YMMV.

They're saying I could've returned within the window
Getting smarter. Never heard them say that before. Though, I don't really use it often.

If you tried returning 60 days after purchase & you were denied so you filed a claim with Amex they wouldn’t deny because you could’ve returned on day 30. If the item is final sale & you prove that to them there’s no reason you’ll be denied. Macy’s has a 180 (could be even 360) day return policy so if the receipt doesn’t say final sale there’s no reason they’d approve your claim.

I called Macy's. They said if I tried to return it they would know on their end that it is final sale

Amex will call the merchant

They also claimed to contact the merchant when I wanted to return a pair of glasses purchased on eBay. Rep said they contacted eBay.com & was told it’s a limited edition item. After calling back & speaking to a claim adjuster, I was told it was denied because they’re eyeglasses which is custom, after explaining & proving it wasn’t claim was approved. Speak to a claim adjuster & you’ll be able to figure it all out.

How does the "restocking fee" option work? I assume it covers returns that require paid shipping. Does Amex just cover the return shipping cost?

No, they don't cover return shipping. They cover restocking fee.
So. For Amazon returns you cannot claim anything unless the window closed.

Probably depends on the claim examiner and what exactly new other means for that item.

I notice the ebay sale details I send in to Amex don't even say if the item is new or not. So I am tempted to give it a try. I think it would work. Unless they take your info and look up the item on ebay some way. I have never sent the screen shot of the actual item, just the details from the sale, afterwards and they have always been approved.

IIRC the T&C's exclude going out of business sales.
