[Updated With More Changes] Major Changes Are Coming For American Express Benefits! Master Chart Of What’s Being Added And Removed - https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/major-changes-coming-american-express-benefits-master-chart-whats-added-removed/

$300 per item, 1K per card per year. So if you have an SPG card and a PRG card you'll only have 2k of total RP coverage, regardless of how many AUs you have on each card.

If you are unsure if an item qualifies for RP, then instead of asking for opinions here (slightly better than asking medical advice on facebook mind you), PUTPAC and ask the RP reps. You don't need to give your name or card info, just say you have an item or you will be buying an item and the store has a crappy return policy and want to make sure if there is a problem you can return it.

or
Return Protection:  www.americanexpress.com/return This is for when, in the first 3 months, the original seller won't accept a return, and the product is still in new condition.
Purchase Protection:  www.americanexpress.com/purchase This is for when, in the first 3 months, a purchase is lost, stolen, or broken.
Extended Warranty: www.americanexpress.com/warranty This covers only what the original warranty covers and extends it for up to 1 year.

Amex can approve RP claims even after the card is closed/cancelled, though YMMV.

Did a claim where the T&C state a two week return policy.  I did not bother contacting the retailer. (do most people actually take this step or do they skip it?)
Now Amex is asking me to send proof that the return was denied.  Even if I email the retailer now, that email will be dated much later than the claim.  Any ideas?

At times I have told amex directly that it was past the return window so didn't bother trying to request refund and they accepted that

Did you get a specific request from Amex, via a new letter, to provide proof of request from the merchant?

If a retailer will only give a site credit, but not a refund, does the item qualify for return protection?
Nope.

That is incorrect. They do cover if the store only gives store credit.

If the window for store credit is less than 90 days you can just wait until it passes

Technically, but wouldn't that officially be insurance fraud?

Maybe because the date of incident on the claim is wrong for your benefit

Do you always go to the store to try and return items before filing a return protection claim?

If not, then I assume that the date of incident is the date you decided to return it and realized it was too late. So don't decide until you also can't get store credit.

If I pay for part of an item using an Amazon GC and the balance on AMEX Plat, I assume the portion paid by GC isn't covered, but is the amount paid by CC eligible for RP? Or is it only covered if you paid the entire amount on AMEX, so in my case there would be no coverage at all?

Just as a side note, for ebay, on the invoice the part of the purchase paid for with ebay gift cards shows up as "coupon" as I recall. So I have had no problem having Amex pay for the amount charged to the card. It has been a couple of years though, so am not sure it is still the case.

Also, I wonder how Amex would treat it in your situation, despite the terms saying to the contrary. If you have already done the purchase, then I would say to try it.

I recall, early on, like the first time I ever planned to use RP, I called Amex and asked them if on a $600 item, I split $300 to two different Amex cards, would I then be covered for $300 on each in the event I wanted to return it?  The reps reply was it would be covered for $300 on just one card. But I don't know how they would actually treat it if submitted. I guess they could have denied the entire claim due to the terms, or perhaps it would actually have worked to get the return on both cards. It may depend on who is looking at the claim.

I listed the date of incident as the date I filed the claim, which was outside the return window altogether, but didn't actually reach out to the vendor (who is online only) because I had exactly that thought - it's past the window, why would they take it back?
However, now - weeks later - Amex is asking me to show them correspondence requesting a return.  So should I make the request now - and then it doesn't match up datewise?

What exactly does their request for documentation say? Do they just need proof that the item was not returned already?

What documentation do we still need from you?
Please submit supporting documentation from merchant showing condition of the item(s) and showing merchant is not willing to accept item(s) to proceed with claim.

What was the item?

I'd send the picture and then an email with the store where they confirm when the return period ended. AmEx only asks for things like this when they can't determine on their own when the return window ended.

I will try that and see what happens.  Thanks!

It shouldn't be a problem as long as you used your AmEx card to pay for the entire purchase amount. How the payment was processed has no bearing on your eligibility for Return Protection. They can see the amount you paid to the retailer, and the amount that was charged to your AmEx card, and as long as those match, you should be good-to-go.
