$300 per item, 1K per card per year. So if you have an SPG card and a PRG card you'll only have 2k of total RP coverage, regardless of how many AUs you have on each card.

If you are unsure if an item qualifies for RP, then instead of asking for opinions here (slightly better than asking medical advice on facebook mind you), PUTPAC and ask the RP reps. You don't need to give your name or card info, just say you have an item or you will be buying an item and the store has a crappy return policy and want to make sure if there is a problem you can return it.

Amex can approve RP claims even after the card is closed/cancelled, though YMMV.

I got a $50.95 check for an account that was closed over a year ago. I had sent back an item in excess of $300.

YES!  after the 90 days window you still have approx 45 days to file a complaint so if it "happened" in the 90 days than you could file the claim even if its already 3.5 months from the purchase date

because I and amex dont know when the coffee spilled he just wrote that he bought it 3.5 months ago but maybe it spiiled already 3 weeks ago so if thats the story he can file a claim and say that the laptop was damaged in the 90 days

They say the card needs to be open to get the claim completed. Might work anyway but if it's a large claim I'd wait.

I think people have been seeing 3-4 weeks total time. You should get an email requesting receipts (assuming the cost is non-trivial; if it is trivial you should get the refund within a couple days) within a day or 2. After that could be anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks.
