AMEX Return Protection: Did They Make You Return The Item?

Not sure about amex, but Paypal offers an under-publicized return shipping refund program: https://www.paypal.com/us/webapps/mpp/returns

I use it whenever the store does not offer free returns and I think there's a decent chance I'm gonna need to send something back

Yes I use it as well but its capped at 12x a year and they’re a pain to deal with. Was wondering if this was another option

I recall soemthing similar happening last year or 2 years ago around year end. I'll see if I can dig it up

Anyone having issues with return protection (on a card which lost this benefit) for items purchased in December? I filed a claim a week ago and usually get refunded in 2 days or so, however so far I haven't heard a/t from Amex.

I submitted a claim on 11/28 and have not received request for docs yet.

I don't remember the exact dates but I submitted a claim within the past ~10 days and got the doc request from Amex pretty soon after opening the claim.

I wonder if part of the delay is they need to check each vendor's holiday return policy, which they seem to be pretty strict about.

Interesting, I didn't know they did that. Are there DP's of Amex doing their own investigation into vendor return policies?

Sure. They do it all the time (not every time, though). My BIL has a store and they called him to ask if he accepts returns.

Gotcha, I wonder if it's primarily at smaller stores where the policy may not be well documented. For example a big merchant like Apple has a clearly documented 14 day return policy...so i'm not really sure what the point of Amex contacting them would be...unless they are asking these merchants to make an exception and accept the return past the stated policy window.

No, they probably just look it up online for those stores.

It's been a long time so i don't recall the details super clearly, but I had a similar situation years ago and they covered it. Plus, it doesn't hurt to try, worst case scenario they deny the claim and that means you just wasted a few minutes filing the claim.

In the past, I've gotten the claims documents within two days of filing the claim online, and a decision by the following Tuesday or Wednesday (it seems like one of those is always the day that they review claims, but maybe that's just a coincidence on my part?). This past time, though, it took a week to receive the claims documents, and I'm still waiting for their decision a week later, so if they don't approve it until the middle of this coming week, then it'll have been about ten days. I'll update this when I receive a decision.
