[Updated With More Changes] Major Changes Are Coming For American Express Benefits! Master Chart Of What’s Being Added And Removed - https://www.dansdeals.com/credit-cards/major-changes-coming-american-express-benefits-master-chart-whats-added-removed/

$300 per item, 1K per card per year. So if you have an SPG card and a PRG card you'll only have 2k of total RP coverage, regardless of how many AUs you have on each card.

If you are unsure if an item qualifies for RP, then instead of asking for opinions here (slightly better than asking medical advice on facebook mind you), PUTPAC and ask the RP reps. You don't need to give your name or card info, just say you have an item or you will be buying an item and the store has a crappy return policy and want to make sure if there is a problem you can return it.

or
Return Protection:  www.americanexpress.com/return This is for when, in the first 3 months, the original seller won't accept a return, and the product is still in new condition.
Purchase Protection:  www.americanexpress.com/purchase This is for when, in the first 3 months, a purchase is lost, stolen, or broken.
Extended Warranty: www.americanexpress.com/warranty This covers only what the original warranty covers and extends it for up to 1 year.

Amex can approve RP claims even after the card is closed/cancelled, though YMMV.

What is "Date of loss" on the first page of the return protection form?

The date you decided you wanted to return it.

I always put purchase date. They ask for date of attempted return later on in process. Probably doesn't matter too much what you put there.

I have been doing this for some time- recently Amex started asking for receipts. However, they always ended up issuing a credit.

I would love to read 86 pages of this thread to catch up but meanwhile can some one please answer my questions:

What is the best purchases to ask for return protection on from Amex to make sure you do not have to return the actual product and deal with shipping stuff?

Does number of the claims matter?

Does the amount make a difference?

does the size of the item make a difference?

from what I read so far mostly electronics are asked to be shipped back...

would really appreciate a good summary perhaps on the unspoken rules..

Thanks

Dont try to beat the system.

Only ask for a refund if you actually cannot return the item but are ready to.

Use those rules along with Amex guidelines and you'll be fine.

It's been bugging me, so I called. They approved the claim and I'll be getting the statement credit. In summary, I submitted the claim on Sunday afternoon 2 weeks ago, I saw on Sunday evening online abou tthe documents needed, so I faxed them in. Got the email requesting the docs 2 days later, but had already sent them. They called last Tuesday I think with some questions, just going over stuff that was on the original form. Closed today and approved for payment, but have not yet gotten the confirmation email.
did they make u send it in?

You can change it to display 50 posts per page then it's only 26 pages to read through  ;)

No real rhyme or reason, however they generally have not asked most people for returning them, and any large heavy items are safe as the shipping would be very expensive for them

I've returned a $300 camera lens and got the credit, no return shipping. one guy had to send back some shirts he bought for like $50. again no rhyme or reason

In general, be prepared to return everything, and hope you have to return nothing. Don't do protection on something you REEAEAALLLY want and are just trying to game the system on.

Is it still brand new and unused? I doubt they'll make you send it back. The only issue is that with many items, even if you use it, you can still repack it and it looks new. A grill....not so much.  Given it's big and heavy, i'd imagine they won't ask for it back.

They've always asked for receipts for items costing more than about $30-$50. Less than that range is usually automatic credit in a day or two.

Does return protection work for when you miss the return window from the store you bought from?

Cool! Now the hard question - is there anything like that on Chase Freedom? (Bought something at 5x points, but now it looks like I would have been better off with amex :) )
