Isn't this a cycle that happens with Alitalia every few years?

I wouldn't see a problem. If you're concerned just make sure to get travel insurance that protects you from financial default (though for all we know, insurance carriers might be excluding Alitalia now - you would need to verify).
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

In many cases, but in some, it might (Transaero anyone?) so caveat emptor!

That sounds a little questionable to me.

I am not an attorney, but based on my understanding, at least in the US, if you paid a company for something, and before they provided it to you they filed for bankruptcy, their obligation to you becomes part of the bankruptcy filing. I am not so sure it can be refunded without court approval (at least of the general terms of the bankruptcy, providing guidelines for things like this).

Seems as they got a short term lifeline for the next six months. It says the schedule will not change. So, It seems that If your flight is within 6 months your fine.

Taken from the article:
"Rome also threw the airline a short-term lifeline by guaranteeing a bridge loan of 600 million euros ($655 million) for six months to see it through the bankruptcy process.

"We wanted to protect ticketed passengers and Alitalia's workers until a suitable buyer is found to preserve the value of a company that has such a legacy brand and is so important for domestic connections,".

Saw this on FT:

"According to this article in Italian http://www.giannidragoni.it/economia/696/ Delta is preparing a joint offer with AF/KL, where the former gets ~49% and AF/KL the remaining 51%, as required by European regulations. Apparently, there will be a joint meeting in Paris to sort out the details of the offer."
