Risk definitely exists. Buy insurance that will give you adequate coverage in case of provider insolvency.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Not really. I usually go to insuremytrip.com to shop for these kinds of plans, but I've seen other sites mentioned around DDF that will also allow you to shop and compare available plans.

Through? They burned through 600m EUR since they filed for bankruptcy (six months that include their busy summer season) and they just got another 300m, no chance it'll last through next summer.

As I have said upthread:

...European. They have perfected the art of can kicking and extend & pretend.

Never underestimate the European (and especially Italian) ability to kick the can down the road.

Sounds like all is good but if I book with Alitalia, does it make sense to book under a Delta codeshare (DL ticket, Alitalia metal)? If Alitalia cancels flight, would DL be on hook to rebook? Price is the same.

DL would be on the hook.

If its issued by Delta, they should rebook you on their own metal.

What people might think won’t make any difference when the proverbial excrement hits the rotation.

Buy with a CC that covers in case of financial default, or don’t buy if your travel plans are too close to Pesach to be able to find a last minute alternative.

Booked ORD-FCO-TLV-AMS-ORD in August.  My outbound ticket is on AZ but return is DL.  Wish I had remembered about this because having to replace one leg if they go bankrupt will be probably next to impossible.

Alitalia (through a 3rd party website).  My return trip is ticketed through DL, though.

I was panicking about this back in November when I booked a ticket for Pesach, but nothing has happened and I made it one way.

My guess is you'll end up being fine, but...

What about booking for June. I'm a taking a risk
I saw this: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-03-15/there-s-a-fight-brewing-for-control-of-italy-s-skies

According to that article is seems that if they really do go under other airlines will take over their flights. True?

I once booked 4 tickets for my family and I on one of the ill fated all business class nyc-lon airlines, I think it was silverjet? They went bankrupt 2 weeks before our flight. British Airways agreed to take our ticket with something like a $150 per ticket fee, so we ended up flying BA J for minimal extra cost. Not saying it will work like that with Alitalia, but a data point that may have some value.
