Looking for a Nice and Cheap Getaway
« on: May 02, 2017, 01:31:07 PM »
My wife and I are in dire need of a vacation, the best time for us is in August after Tisha B'av. I'd like to go somewhere nice but inexpensive, not looking to spend much money and I don't have lots of points (~80k UR, ~47k SPG, ~75k Thank You Points - is that even worth anything for travel???). As far as I'm concerned it can be anywhere that isn't in the Tri-State area (domestic or international), and we should be able to blow off some steam for 7-10 days, nothing fancy. Any ideas?

Have you been to Toronto? My fiance and I are planning a trip there later this month and it seems to be a fairly causal vacation atmosphere. Dan has a couple of trip reports and I'll hopefully have one soon following the end of the month.

I've been there on very short visits at 2 different occasions (I might actually go in and out next week), I'd like to hear more about your trip once it's done and I'll definitely check out Dan's reports. Thanks!

les doux alpes- it is a ski town in upstate france. Many European jews retreat here in the summer. You can get a room and full board for 1000 a week. I had and amazing experience last year and hope to return. you can use miles to fly to GVA and then drive 3 hours to the hotel. (25k AF, 30K UA ect...)

Assuming you mean Newport Rhode Island, it doesn't look like there's much to do there (definitely not for 7-10 days), CMIIW. I don't see any destination guides for Cape Code (Massachusetts?)

I've never skied before (neither has my wife), do you think we'll have what to do for a week there?

Yes very much! Though there is skiing- it is not the main point- it is Summer after all. The town has many great summer activities for the Family, for him, or for her. I warmly recommend it!

Also there is a yeshiva retreat there for adults and buchrim that makes the town magical for these three weeks.

(it begins Aug 7th.)

New Hampshire - hiking; skilifts up to see sights; Has shul and kosher food in Bethlehem.  Drive there, but takes about 8 hours.

San Francisco - enough to do for a week- kosher food, minyan?  Reasonably priced flights. Can probably get a reasonable hotel.

Mystic, CN-2 days; Newport, RI -1 day; Boston, MA -2 days. These are the minimum time in each place.  There's more things available. Drive - maybe too much. Hotels ca be found for reasonable prices.  Food and minyan- sometimes.  Things to do: historical, old buildings, water sports. You go at your own pace and interest.

Maine- Bangor has Acadia National Park- beautiful hiking and nature. Can drive or fly and rent/drive.  Chabad of Bangor and Portland have Shabbos packages. Otherwise no food or minyan.

Florida flights are cheap in summer, but it's very hot and humid then.

Vancouver and Canadian Rockies, Or Vancouver by itself. If you fly coach, and you plan ahead, you can probably do it with the points you have, plus a little out of pocket.

There is a kosher B&B in Bar Harbor (Acadia National Park), and they will do milchik dinners I think.

For kashrut see

http://www.totallyjewishtravel.com/vacations/kosher_hotels_and_resorts/shore-path-cottage-a-kosher-bed-and-breakfast-in-bar-harbor-maine-usa

I know the owner, she is shomrei shabbat but generally doesn't advertise to kosher crowd as finds them quite difficult!
