Quick update for Eccobee Premium: I tried process of elimination by adding more and more tape every time proximity sensor was still active. I have now used half of a roll of electric tape, I taped every part of the thermostat including the sides, and yet the proximity sensor is still active. I truly wonder how the sensor works. Would love any insight.

Have you tried looking for the location of the sensor by looking at the live video from a smartphone or digital camera screen? IR sensors glow on camera. On my Ecobee3 lite it's in the upper left corner.

Smart Thermostat Premium
https://www.ecobee.com/en-us/smart-thermostats/smart-thermostat-premium/
Occupancy (Radar)
Proximity (Radar)

Probably a mmwave chip, works through plastic and is behind the screen. No amount of tape will help.

I had the same issue once the new interface came out, about a month or three ago, but I fixed it. Unfortunately, I don't remember how.

Same here. But only the Ecobee3 Lite with a bit of electrical tape covering the IR occupancy sensor. The newer ecobee thermostats have radar which can't be disabled for shabbat AFAIK.

I got the basic Google nest for $5 from my energy provider. I love it and how I can control it from my app anywhere in the world. You just need to turn off presence sensing as well as the auto display feature for walking by it.

Still find it remarkable there's no good solution for having a shabbos mode. Was working on a solution and started with the Melacha Plug, the last bit is the easy part just very DIY.

Was working on a design

Any recommendations for an offline snow sensor?

This might be useful to other Home Assistant users.
I've adapted a Blueprint I found for a Hue remote over ZHA to be disabled on shabbas by using the issue_melacha_in_effect sensor from the Jewish Calendar integration.

I keep the remote on my bedside and this prevents the buttons from doing anything on shabbas when the toddlers get their hands on it.
The concepts should be easy to reuse for other blueprints and automations that may be useful for other use cases such as ensuring sensors don't trigger things or buttons can't be mistakenly pressed.
