Not sure if this is the right place. I live in NJ, looking to become a first time gun owner, can anyone with real world experience tell me how long and complicated the process actually was?

The wiki on Reddit.com/r/njguns is where I learnt all the rules.

I did it a while ago. The process wasn't hard and I think it took around a month to get fingerprinted and get the document from the local Police department.

Its fairly straightforward. Everything is applied online now. I would tell you to apply for a handgun at the same time while applying for FID card. From your other posts, we may be in the same ORI code. In that case, I'm told our PD is one of the fastest  to approve people (although, that may have been referring to concealed permit). I am looking for recommendations for a first handgun.

I am looking for something that:
1 - Is a good gun to use to learn to shoot and practice with. I've only been to a range 1-2 times so I want something that I can easily be taught to use and practice with on my own.
2 - Reasonably inexpensive.
3 - That I can carry once I am proficient and get a CC permit. I don't plan on carrying regularly, but want something that I can CC when needed.

Any suggestions? If this is a PM discussion, feel free to PM.

Sig sauer p365 xl. (Other versions of 365 might be good options too)
Definitely try shooting ur options before deciding/purchasing.
Bigger gun =easier to learn/shoot.
Smaller=easier/ comfortable to conceal.

Apply online. (Include pistol permit if wanted)
Provide references.
After references respond fingerprint.
Payment.
Get permit emailed.
Go buy gun

(Some towns quicker then others. Lakewood is around 3/4 weeks.
Assuming u do the whole process quickly)

Not sure I understand. Are you saying that I should look for two different recommendations because something which is good for #1/2 won't be what I want for #3?

I would buy two different guns. You can get a decent gun at a reasonable priced for plinking, target practice and get comfortable with. For defense/CC I would spend a few bucks and not use it for everyday target practice.

Can you explain the reason not to use the defense/CC one for everyday practice? Does it make it less reliable?

Glock 43x or a SIG P365 variant

You can go to most gun ranges and ask to rent various ones and you can try them out and see what feels good in your hand, how it shoots, etc.

Also, how you carry concealed makes a difference. A Glock 19 is considered a big gun, but I have an excellent holster, and even people who know I carry it aren't able to see that I'm carrying it.

What holster setup? Im having a hard time comfortably concealing my p320c.

PHLSTER Enigma Express. It isn't cheap, but it's the last holster you'll ever buy. Check out their YouTube channel for tons of great educational and practical info. I'm a big guy, and appendix carry can actually still be comfortable with this holster as it works independently of your pants. And it can even be worn with gym shorts.
