Last night I got very excited, and then very pissed, and then very excited, and then very pissed, and finally now, I'm back to being excited.

I found a car on Avis's website - a one way rental - when every other car rental company wanted $100 a day, for $55 a day. Excited. I then found out that there are no miles included, and it's .40 per mile for the 500 mile trip I need to take. Pissed. Then I called Avis and the guy said "No problem I'll change it to unlimited miles for you." Wow. Excited. I then called the OP and told him the good news, only for him to retort "They probably changed the rate." Indeed they had, to $100 a day. Pissed. I called back the same rep I spoke to originally and he said he would 'send it upstairs' to see what they could do for me. I check online now and see no price or mileage on the reservation. I call Avis and she tells me "you have unlimited miles and the price has been manually entered at $55 a day. If you have any problems at the counter just call us. But don't worry, because it's been approved by upper management."

Excited. Very Excited.

Oh crap I just realized I need 2 cars. Ugh!

For every rental you rent with AVIS, you can get points in a variety of airline & hotel programs, but you have to find out which one is the best one for the points.

Most US companies will give you only 50 miles/points per rental and a maximum of 500, and have limitations as only airport locations, etc.. But Virgin Atlantic gives you a minimum of 1000 miles and sometimes even 1500 miles for any AVIS rental.

P.S. The AVIS list wasn't updated in ages, so it gives you an option for Virgin Freeway, that is the option you need to use.

I was wondering if I typed my MAtmid number from ElAl how many point they would give me for let's say a $100 rental. With Matmid, points are worth much more, no?

The ElAl website says - http://www.elal.co.il/ELAL/English/MatmidFrequentFlyer/BenefitsFromELALPartners/Car.htm

Quote
Points will be given on car rentals to customers who book their El Al flights for dates up to a week from the date of the car rental.

AVIS
Platinum (PL) and Gold (GL) members: 15 points per car rental.
Silver (SL) and Matmid (TL) members: 10 points per car rental.

So it might not be worth it to try it, and lose the points...

I'm not familiar with how many points it costs to fly to Israel. Is there any way to pull shtick and rent for one day again and again and get enough Matmid points to do something worthwhile?

After going thru all the corporate accounts and discounts I still find that hotwire and priceline are cheaper on car rentals.

With ba u get 750 per rental, and (i think) their mileage is worth more than virgin - go to avisba.com. And if u sign up for preferred through them they have a guarantee that if it takes more than 3 minuets to get you car you get $40.
