Maybe for proof of insurance?

Just say it's a rented car and you have insurance from your american credit card.

You do need the Rental Contract in the car to show who's car you are driving.
Just for calling a fellow Jew a ממזר you deserve to pay.
After you pay try to find that lovely cop & apologize to him for calling him such a name

ask avis if you need to have it in the car, and if you do, for what purpose.

if just for insurance purposes, you dont have to show it to a cop.

Moish, don't get worked up, not about the ticket or about the shmendy. it's obvious this shmendy knows nothing about the cops over in Israel which btw are not all jewish.

In regards to the ticket, assuming your in the MIR and located in Yerushalayim and asuming you didn't say anything stupid to the cop because they write on the ticket what you say. you need to wait at least 2 weeks from when you received the ticket and then you should go to "binyan clall" on yaffo street, i think it's the 9th floor it's the police dept. floor and take a number for disputing a ticket. when you get your turn be nice and ask them if they can switch it to a "azhara" a warning and dismiss the ticket, being that your from the states and you didn't know it was against the law and that you would chalila never break a law from the jewish state and that is your first ticket. they should throw it out. if you can't wait 2 weeks then you can go now and write a letter explaining the above and that should work too. make sure to bring the ticket with you. you can double check where their location is by calling the yerushalayim number on back of the ticket. Let me know what happens.

Also smart move that you had your contract with you otherwise they might of confiscated your car since they are ......

1. Why not?  ;)

2. (1. It's not against the law everywhere and they wouldn't know where it is or isn't. (2. It's just a clerk by a computer with a police uniform not a judge nothing to be to worried about. You have nothing to lose either way.  Also i was just giving ideas you could pick and choose.

3. Depending on your luck (assuming you look chareidi you don't have any luck) they may make serious issues if you don't have your contract and they may confiscate the vehicle. what i mean by confiscate is to not let you drive until you show them proof that you may legally drive the vehicle i.e. the contract. But i do not mean confiscate as in what they do (at least used to) in ny if your caught drunk driving.
Officialy the law in israel is that you must carry your id with you at all times if not they can legally arrest you. although i have never ever heard of anyone getting arrested for not carrying their passport, i have only heard of 2 cases where they were threatend. but in the case of the car they do have the authority to confiscate cars if your caught speeding at dangerous speeds or if you are not legally allowed to drive for whatever reason. And most often they don't mind making your day miserable.

Over a year ago i got a 50nis ($15 usd) parking ticket for an expired parking card (i guess the Israeli manual system for parking meters).
It was on a rental.
I never bothered paying.
Do i need to worry that they got my details from the rental company and are going to come after me the next time i return to Israel to get their 50nis (+ late fees!) ?

Anyone have any experience with this?

I had a similar story with Avis. I got a 250 shekel parking ticket...wasn't any sign that said no parking but cop gave me a ticket anyway.

I called up the parking police people (yeah just made that up) and the lady asked if I was american. I said yes. She said just don't pay it and after 3 months we'll send the bill to avis and ask them to pay.

They will send us a letter saying it was a renter's fault and we will then cancel the ticket! They may then charge you a handling fee of 70 shekel for the trouble. This is what she told me herself!

V'kach hava - so it was!
