After the fee is credited to your acct, you can call and ask for a check

+1

They also offer to apply a credit to another Amex account you have, but as Dan points pout that isn't a good idea as it decreases your rewards (e.g. SPG starpoints) by lowering your spend on the card by $450 (or whatever the amount of your credit was).

what do u mean that it lowers tour spend on the card?  if I already spent $450 on my gold card and now I'm getting this $450 put on my gold card, why wouldn't I get the points for the amount spent?

Because your net amount would be $0.

but why would that be any different than if I made a $450 payment to my card before my statement closes?

would it count for the $1k threshold at least?

It is a computer generated thing- afaik- at the end of the month looks at your bill and adjusts your points, if you end up with a negative balance then they will deduct that from your point total
