I thought that it was just a made-up closed captioning piece. But, it's real and he's real. More important things going on in the world.

Tfillin? awesome! Not being perceptive enough to get boy's feedback (he thought it was a Bar Mitzvah!), problematic. If a boy is willing to do something new like this and even terms it a Bar Mitzvah (where relatives later sent checks, ie still has not been corrected), he is ripe for kiruv now. Bar Mitzvah could have been the carrot. Now it's over. He's had his (according to his thinking). Missed opportunity from a potentially great source.

First of all you are reading too much into a comedic exchange (I doubt he got those checks...).
Second of all where some may see a missed opportunity others will see a seed that has been planted. this boy had a positive Jewish experience and someday when he is older and wiser and will have an opportunity to learn more he won't be instantly turned off. Don't underestimate the power of a single Mitzvah...
