I was once at the home of Rav Hillel Zaks, grandson of the Chofetz Chaim, in Kiryat Sefer.

The only picture he had in his home of his grandfather is the one with his face half covered.

Although he never met him, he remarked that his mother (Chofetz Chaims daughter) said that if she saw "the guy from the famous CC picture" on the street, she would not recognize him.

That's the one I was referring to. I've heard various opinions about the "fake" one. I definitely don't see any resemblance from the video.

Interesting side note- I was once in R' Shurkin's apt and I noticed he had that pic of the Chafetz Chaim, except the picture was larger with more of a panoramic view. He told me the famous picture was cropped from that one, and showed me in the original that his father R' Y"M Shurkin was one of the bochurim standing outside.

The story how it was suddenly discovered is as follows I heard it from the person that found it.
A family wanted to make some kind of family presentation for their parents anniversary they knew in the family that their grandfather was by this kinis gedoilim and someone in his family told him that a university in South Carolina that's based for collecting old videos has a video of this kinis so he went to their website and saw that they posted a small part of the video which didn't have he chofetz Chaim ( it went around on whats app around a week before the part with the chofetz Chaim came out) he tried downloading it but Cldnt so he called up the university and got thru to someone he told him that he wants the video for a family presentation so the guy sent him a email with the video and wrote that he found the whole video not only the small part that was posted on the site and he's sending him the full thing the guy opens the video a Lo and behold by 13 seconds ( from the 6 min clip) he saw the chofetz Chaim!!!!! He said he has the video for a few weeks somehow it leaked out that part I'm not sure how it happened!!

I love how people in the olden days didn't yet understand that the beauty of a video camera is that it captures live action. You always see old videos with people posing in front of the video camera as they would in a still photo.

Half of my father's bar mitzva video is footage of the family standing and posing.

It's impossible for us to appreciate the novelty of what the movie was for them...

Sort of like my 3 year old will never appreciate what's amazing about a phone without a wire.

I'm assuming the guy was blocking the camera at the Chafetz Chaim's insistence, for the same reason we don't have any photographs of him other than the one.

There is another very uncommon picture with him wearing tefillin, much clearer.

Why didn't they put it out there all this time ? This is at a public event, not privately in his house.

They shouldn't assume that. He's at a public event where hundreds of people see him. & its only 10 seconds of a video.
