Topic Wiki

If your video is not embedding, see if your link starts with "http:" - if it does, change it to "https:" and it will work.

If a video isn't embedded you should assume it may be inappropriate for some people.

How do I embed a Youtube video?
Simply post the YouTube URL.
Alternately (actually, this may no longer work):
Click the "youtube" button on the second row on the furthermost left side.
You will now have the words: in your editor.
Now, copy and paste the youtube video id (youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0&x=y) in between the middle brackets in order for it to look like this:

and leave out this part of the link: "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v="

Or you can paste the YouTube link, highlight it, and then click on the "YouTube" button. This will encase the link in the youtube tags,
Now just click "post" and you're done!

How can I search if a video has been posted here before?
This is not foolproof, but it's a good start.
Search for the youtube ID (youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0)

Nothing new and not Jewish music so I won't embed, but worth a listen once in a while. If you are a parent and can listen without getting at least a little emotional, then something is wrong with you.

there's a "frum " version on one of the Journey's tapes?

Not that I know of. Do you mean a version of the lyrics or of the tune? Though I was gonna post anyway, just about anything slow from Journeys can get me to cry at the right time.

The Place Where I Belong - First and foremost. This is the holocaust/sefer torah song. First in a long line of heart-string tugging holocaust related songs (Teardrop, Memories, The Man From Vilna, Shema Yisrael - though that last one isn't Journeys).
Rebbe Akiva - Didn't used to get me going, but after naming my first child Akiva...
Neshomele - That moment where MBD joins in as the neshama...
Joe Dimmaggios Card - Just about the whole second half is gold, but the ending with the grandson and the gedolim card always gets me.
Lulei Soroscha - Really brings out the emotional aspect of the connection a Jew who learns today maintains with past generations.

Come to think of it, I probably shouldn't have made this list, playing most of them while doing so, at work. Hope no one asks me why I was crying. 8)

Jacks and the dreidel
Variations 1
+1 thats the one !

My child was born just the other day
We gave him a bris in the traditional way.
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned the aleph beis when I was away.
He started learning chumash and as he grew he’d say
“I want to learn with you dad,
You know I want to learn with you.”

And the jacks and the dreidle and a red balloon
Little boy Dov grew up so soon
“When can we learn dad?”
“ I don’t know when, but we’ll get together then, son,
You know we’ll learn together then.”

My boy was Bar Mitzvah on a shabbos day
He read from the torah in a beautiful way.
He asked me “Abba, can we learn today?”
I said “not right now”, he said “that’s okay”
And as he walked away his smile never dimmed
It said, “I’m gonna learn with him, yeah,
Someday I’m gonna learn with him.”
(And the jacks and the dreidle…)

Well he came from yeshiva just the other day
A young, pious man I just had to say
“Son I’m proud of you, can we talk for awhile?”
He said “I’d love to dad”, with a great big smile
“What I’d really love most is to study tonight,
If you want to come it’s quite alright.”
(And the jacks and the dreidle…)

It’s been some time since my son moved away
Now I call him up almost every day.
We talk about the parsha and the things he learns
And how around the torah this whole world turns.
I feel so refreshed when the call is through
“It’s really nice talking to you son,
It’s sure nice learning with you.”

And as I hung up the phone, I could feel in my heart,
It’s never to late to start, yeah,
It’s never to late to start.

(And the jacks and the dreidle…)

And that's why I don't like Variations. Literally the only things changed in that song are the activities, and making the ending less depressing.

I heard the Variations version tens of times and it didn't move me one bit.
I heard the original, and it blew me away.

Meh - I guess if I felt that I don't spend enough time with the kids I would feel it?

C'mon. Can't you have normal human emotions once in a while?
Everyone can always grow in all areas of life. So as good of a parent as someone is, they can always be better.

It's called self defense mechanisms ;)

But though I'm out of the house a lot these days, it is absolutely and only to feed, cloth and house my kids. - so obviously, while it's always possible to spend more time with them, I am basically always spending time ON them. - So I'm happy either way

The song clearly states that the father wasn't present a lot because "there were planes to catch, and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away".

So im saying that if the dad was away "to pay the bills" he shouldn't feel guilty.

Who's talking about guilty. The point of the song is to spend more time with your children.
It's a very emotional thing - this bond between parents and children - so a great song with great words on the subject touches most humans. Welcome to Earth.
