I don't agree with CBC's phrasing, but the song doesn't tug at me either. I hear the song as being about an effectively, and sometimes literally, absent father. As someone who spends time with his kids most nights and just about all weekends, it doesn't really speak to me. There's no exactly correct amount of time to spend with your kids, it depends on you and it depends especially on your kids. And you may have different kids that thrive with more or less attention, or a kid that needs more attention at one point and more space at another. Bottom line, I don't think it's so crazy to not be moved to tears by Cat's in the Cradle.

I totally agree that everyone's different, and not everyone has to be tugged by the same song.
But getting tugged by the song has nothing to do with if you spend time with your kids.

The song is about a father who was the extreme. But it's poetry, it's art, it's talking to everyone thru an extreme example.

I understood the song was expressing guilt and sadness about the guilt.

A gadfly is an irritating person, a nuisance who will often ask too many questions or lob lots of criticisms in order to get his or her way.

Ok. I guess everyone can interpret it differently.
I don't feel guilty at all about the amount of time I spend with my children, and I still feel the song talks to me in a very powerful way.

Nor am I balling in tears, but the lyrics and melody are still powerful.
And working to pay the bills is a complete cop-out and exactly what the song is about. Everyone has to at least wonder under their work/family balance.
