Contestants on an episode of “Jeopardy!” that aired Wednesday night were stumped when presented with a photo of cholent, a stew traditionally cooked by observant Jews over the course of Shabbat.

The clue, for $400 in the “Sabbath” category: “Exodus 35:3 bans doing this on the Sabbath, hence the Jewish dish ‘cholent,’ which can go on the stove Friday and cook until Saturday lunch.”

The contestants got close with guesses of “What is cooking?” and “What is work?” but failed to name the exact Shabbat prohibition Mayim Bialik, the show’s temporary host and herself an Orthodox Jew, was looking for.


In the end, Bialik explained the answer: “What is ‘lighting a fire?’ And the word ‘cholent’ is from the French ‘chaud lent,’ [meaning] ‘cooks a long time.'”

Explaining cholent on national television was a fitting role for Bialik, the first Jew to host the popular quiz show.

Bialik, who starred in “The Big Bang Theory,” served as a celebrity host during the search for longtime “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek’s replacement and was named a host for primetime specials in August.

After Mike Richards, the show’s executive producer who was selected to host the show full-time, was revealed to have made offensive comments about women and Jews, Bialik was temporarily promoted to full-time host. While Jeopardy producers continue to search for Richards’ permanent replacement, Bialik has said she’d like to keep the gig permanently.

Bialik frequently writes about her Jewish identity and posted a video about her Jewish identity to Twitter Wednesday as part of a social media campaign organized by Hillel International to help Jewish college students feel proud of their Jewish identity. Bialik produced a series of videos for My Jewish Learning this year.

First of all, surely the host doesn't write the Q/A's. Second of all, the correct answer is must be lighting a fire and not cooking, since only the former is mentioned in the referenced pasuk:

“Exodus 35:3 bans doing this on the Sabbath, hence the Jewish dish ‘cholent,’ which can go on the stove Friday and cook until Saturday lunch.”

But yes, the 2 halves of the clue don't really play nice together since cholent comes out of hilchos bishul more than mav'ir. I will say that the first guesser should probably have realized cooking wasn't the 'question' since it was part of the 'answer'.

Yup had the same thought about the back door - as a kid I noticed that as well.

I haven't listened in a few years, but for some reason in my mind - there were 2 entrances: 1) in the cave, which required the Golden Crown, and 2) under the chambers within the palace which didn't need the Crown.

The cave was the hoax.. either way as a kid I used to skip the songs, only as an adult do I enjoy them. I remember the one time I by mistake left the tape running and found out about Dr. Middos

1) the cave didn't need the crown, that's just where Borozov was hiding. It is mashma that the Duke's treasures wouldn't require the Golden Crown as then why would the Duke give it to the Rabbi?

2) it definitely did need the crown, which is likely why the Count believed the rabbi as he had already locked the Duke up over there using the Crown as the key, so it would make sense the treasure used the same key.

Another tirutz could be that the Count fashioned another key based off the golden crown which he was able to use while Borozov had the crown.

The crown only opens the passageway. Obviously there must be secondary locks and doors to the actual cellar, otherwise the prisoners could wait by the door and over power the person unlocking the heavy door with the crown. וק"ל.

Because after he got the crown back he would have once again locked the passage way with the crown lock.

The question of the need for speed can be asked on why they made the captain shlep so far to the cave if the Duke was in imminent danger.
