My sis is looking for a laptop for basic use.

It will be used primarily for:
Typing and creating presentations , so I will install MS Office on it.
Internet browsing.
(Possibly creating PDF's.)

We need a decent size screen, between 15' and 17'.
Don't need much computing power.
Needs an optical drive.
Weight is not an issue.

She can save <$100 (probably less) and get an inferior processor, or spend the little bit more and get the performance boost that comes that. I think both options work, it's really about the budget.

Makes sense. I guess the question is just how much each can be gotten for. What can we get with a $400 budget?

Yes, the i3 will definitely perform better than older and/or cheaper processors.

If you try hard enough you'll find a Core i3 at $400, and other processors (e.g. P6200) for ~$350.

i just bought the lenevo for 370 it has a dual core processor. They also have a Toshiba for 400 with a I3 processor.

Not an i3 (just saying in case the OP is looking for one). The did have a Lenovo i3 there for $428 (a great deal IMO), but it's dead.

That ones not a Lenovo, but still a nice deal. Intel Core i3 is Intel's most recently released class of decent low-end processors. They just came out with a second gen core i3.

Ah, that's an i3 for $400. If the OP considers Toshiba a good brand, I'd say go for it.

I agree i would have paid the 30 $ more but they do not ship. So 30 dollars more plus hassle of shlepping to pick it up plus gas and laziness lead me to the Lenevo

I didn't realize the Toshiba is in store only. Either way, it's proof an i3 can be had for $400.
