cancel aa ticket booked with MR

my friend is supposed to be flying tonight nyc-tlv with aa booked with MR,
something came up today and he can't fly :(,
 is it possible to cancel?
 or is there anything he can do not to loose the whole thing?!

Should be able to call AA and cancel per normal rules
